Epic Disables Video Capture Feature For Fortnite On Switch
Fortnite has been taking over the Battle Royale genre since 2018 basically started. And one of the biggest moves that it did was make its way onto the Nintendo Switch. Which is one of the best-selling consoles of the last 18 months. Within a day, it had over 2 million downloads, and that was in June, who knows how many people have downloaded it since then. However, despite the much-desired port, not all gamers are happy, as Epic Games has removed a feature from the Switch version: video capture.
Epic Games revealed on Reddit that they removed the feature because it was hurting the stability of the game.
“You may have noticed we’ve disabled the Video Capture feature on Nintendo Switch as of the v5.40.2 client update. This was done for performance and stability reasons as we’ve been seeing a high rate of Out of Memory related crashes. Disabling this feature saves a significant amount of RAM while also having a positive effect on overall performance across the board,” it said.
Now, Epic Games did note though that this feature may not be gone forever, it just depends on how much they’re able to fix it and thus fix performance:
We’re considering the possibility of making this feature optional in the future for players who don’t mind taking a hit on their performance.”
While understandable, some Fortnite players aren’t happy, they want the feature back, even if it’s optional to the players:
“Probably one of my biggest Switch disappointments. On a hardware level, there should have been a dedicated chip/memory for video capture/sharing. I completely understand this would mean less battery life and more power consumption – but it could easily be a turn on/off feature. I believe they could have fit it on the board too.
It’s unclear when Epic Games will make their decision on the feature.
