EA Wrongfully Censored Name In Madden NFL 19
In the NFL, there is a major controversy going on right in terms of players getting down on one knee in protest of various things during the National Anthem. This is getting a lot of press because it’s being considered disrespectful by some, and yet part of the constitution (right to protest) for others. The man who started this though was former 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who is blackballed in the league because of what he did. And now, it’s gotten to the point where his name was censored out of a song in Madden NFL 19.
A song from the soundtrack of Madden NFL 19 is “Big Bank”, and in it there is a line that goes, “You boys all cap, I’m more Colin Kaepernick.” But now, as many who are getting review copies of the game noted that they have edited out the name during the song verse, so it ends with “I’m more…”, and people aren’t happy about it.
Mainly because this looks like a blatant attempt to make sure Kaepernick (pictured above on the right) is not a part of the NFL in any way shape or form. Not only that, they don’t technically have the right to do that.
Sure enough, sites like IGN reached out to EA, who gave this reply:
“We made an unfortunate mistake with our Madden NFL soundtrack. Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don’t have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn’t affect soundtracks. We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. We will make it right, with an update to Madden NFL 19 on August 6 that will include the reference again. We meant no disrespect, and we apologize to Colin, to YG and Big Sean, to the NFL, to all of their fans and our players for this mistake.”
So it appears the situation will be righted, but the question is, are the sound designers really to blame? Madden NFL 19 comes out August 10th.
