EA Reveals Significance Behind Battlefield V’s Name
One of the things that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle in terms of “what goes into making a video game” in the eyes of non-developers is the naming of the title. For just like a movie, TV show, book, or song, the title can help set the mood or intent of the game. Now, there are many franchises that go the simple route and just call the subsequent titles “2”, “3”, etc. This includes the Battlefield saga in many cases. However, with Battlefield V, there’s more of a hidden meaning to it.
In a conversation on Twitter, someone asked the official Battlefield V Twitter account why they used the peace sign to say “V” in one of their tweets. The account replied:
represents “V for Victory”. The phrase and sign were popularized by Winston Churchill and used amongst the allies for much of WWII. It’s also why we chose to use the Roman numeral V instead of the number 5 for the title.
As you can see, EA and DICE went for a very symbolic title, one that felt true to what the game was. And they’re right, in WWII, the peace symbol was a very powerful thing for both the Allies and those who struck back against the Axis powers, and it worked.
EA and DICE have done something like this before, mainly with their last title, Battlefield 1. For while it was hardly the first game in the series, the “1” represented World War 1, which few video games had ever done before in such detail.
There’s still a lot of questions about what Battlefield V is going to be like despite having a reveal trailer come out. Many are hoping that at E3 2018 we’ll get some more in-depth viewings of gameplay, and possibly get confirmation as to whether the title will have a Battle Royale mode like what rumors say it will.
