EA has reportedly purchased Respawn, the developer of the Titanfall series, following the recent news of the publisher shutting down Visceral Games. According to a recent press release, the deal is worth $455 million, which comes in the form of cash, equity and performance milestone payments.
Over the past few weeks, there has been rumblings among staff at Respawn regarding the prospect of a sale, though it wasn’t until a meeting today that it was actually confirmed to be true and the studio were told. Previously, a source who managed to gain access to Respawn’s plans spoke of an acquisition contract, which revealed that EA would be paying over $400 million to obtain the studio from LA. It is also said that EA had to outbid South Korean publisher Nexon, who published the Titanfall mobile game and also wanted to purchase Respawn.
This bid was matched by EA, which had to be done within 30 days. What’s more, Respawn will also be entitled to bonuses based on metacritic scores for the upcoming Star Wars game and the yet to be announced Titanfall 3. Hopefully this will be a positive move for Respawn going forward, lest they go the same way of Visceral Games recently.
