Rumors are circling that Disney could be bringing an end to the licensing agreement that EA holds over the Star Wars gaming franchise. The multi-year deal was signed back in 2013, in which several triple-A Star Wars titles would agreed to be released across a number of platforms. However, it now seems that Disney are looking into alternative avenues, and won’t be extending their agreement with Electronic Arts.
Disney obtained Lucasfilm in 2012, and decided to go with EA after it was made clear that LucasArts division weren’t interested in making any first-party Star Wars games. Now however, Disney/Lucasfilm aren’t happy with EA following the outpour of controversy since the release of Star Wars Battlefront II.
Five years after signing the deal, EA has managed just two major Star Wars titles, both of which have been met with plentiful backlash. Other rumors suggest that Disney are looking to the likes of Ubisoft and Activision to take up the mantle of releasing future titles in the epic franchise, though this has yet to be confirmed.
What is worth keeping in mind is that EA only have a publishing agreement with Disney, so as far as development is concerned, Disney could work with any studio they please.
Star Wars Battlefront II is now available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
