Activision-Blizzard confirmed in a quarterly financial report that Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 aren’t coming in 2021.
Blizzard needs a powerful release
Diablo IV looks like a prettier, but less interesting older brother of Diablo 2. Overwatch 2 is Overwatch but with some story elements and a campaign. Neither are highly anticipated titles, but both hold a lot of potential. Mostly because Blizzard didn’t impress anyone with its latest releases. Shadowlands is the only notable recent launch, the WoW expansions that was well received by most WoW players.
That’s exactly why new titles are a source of hope for Blizzard fans. Yet, this ray of hope isn’t on the horizon as some expected. Activision chief financial officer Dennis Durkin said in a quarterly financial report:
We expect Blizzard’s net bookings to grow, given the momentum in World of Warcraft and the other growth
initiatives we have in the business. Our outlook does not include Diablo IV or Overwatch 2 launching in 2021
We won’t be seeing Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 in 2021 or anytime soon
Even though the same report said that the devs are “working hard” on these two titles, alongside many mobile games, we won’t be seeing them this year. At least the dev team working on Diablo IV is communicating with the fans, keeping things transparent, and implementing their feedback as best they can. Overwatch 2 information, on the other hand, is scarce. But the hype regarding an expansion being sold as a fully priced triple-A game isn’t that present, for good reason.
However, this isn’t surprising information. Diablo IV’s development is progressing steadily, but it’s far from finished. A lot of core gameplay systems still aren’t satisfactory. On the other hand, Overwatch 2 news is rarer than a Legendary item in Diablo 3. Both Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 need a lot more time in the oven before they’re ready to be consumed by the masses, so expecting them in 2021 isn’t realistic.
