Diablo Creator Talks About Art And Thoughts On Diablo III
Diablo III has been a very polarizing game for fans since its launch back in 2012. First off, the game took a very long time to arrive, with many notable stop and restarts in development. Then, when it did launch, fans were shocked to see just how different it was from Diablo II, which to this day remains a fan-favorite title. Blizzard has made many strides to correct this, including releasing major expansions like Reaper of Souls and the Rise of the Necromancer, but to many, it’s not enough.
However, there is one who is pleased with how Diablo III turned out, and that’s the creator of the franchise, David Brevik. Ironically, he was working on the third game in his series before he left Blizzard. He talked with IGN about how he thought the game was:
“I think that Diablo III ended up being a great game, especially after the expansion,” Brevik said on IGN Unfiltered. “I thought that they added a lot of really great stuff to it that fleshed it out and made it a much better game than I thought that it was at launch,” he said in regard to the expansion content.”
But that’s not all he said, he went a step further and said that even the launch form of Diablo III (which if you recall a lot of players had problems with) was pretty good too, and did indeed honor the legacy of Diablo.
Now, as we noted above, Brevik worked on the game before his departure from Blizzard. So, what was the biggest difference from what he worked on to what got released? The art, apparently.
“Our art style up north was different than the art style from the guys down [at Blizzard South], and so in a lot of ways it was much more like Diablo II-looking than it was what Diablo III ended up looking like.”
