Dead Space 4 Was Planned Out
The Dead Space series was a trio of titles that took a couple of interesting twists to deliver a rather special experience. It combined the horror of titles like Alien, but added some unique crafting, a story focused on a non-standard hero, and then evolved it over two games. Eventually, the series was stopped, but the question remained, if it was allowed to continue, what would Dead Space 4 have been like? Well, the head of the team behind the game was happy to reveal his ideas.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Ben Wanat revealed some interesting twists that would have come to the series. For example, he noted that they were planning to open up the stars above to gamers:
“The notion was you were trying to survive day to day against infested ships, searching for a glimmer of life, scavenging supplies to keep your own little ship going, trying to find survivors,”
They actually hinted at this style of gameplay during Dead Space 3:
“The flotilla section in Dead Space 3 hinted at what non-linear gameplay could be, and I would have loved to go a lot deeper into that. I figured you’d start in a section of space, maybe following a trail of ship carcasses to an orbital station you think might have the parts and fuel needed to get your ship Shock-capable.”
Arguably most interesting of all is the fact that Dead Space 4 wouldn’t have had Isaac Clarke as the main character. Wanat felt that because of where the story was at the end of 3, the next one wouldn’t have needed Clarke to be there in the lead role.
So who would be the main character? Well, Wanat noted that he felt Elle Langford would’ve been the lead. Sadly, the studio that developed these games, Visceral, is gone, and it makes it very unlikely that we’ll get this title anytime soon.
