A new perspective on the horror genre has arrived on Steam, thanks to the arrival of Darkwood. This alternate take on the stereotypical survival horror games sees players wandering the large, ever-changing free-roaming world during the day, before going into hiding to survive the dark night.
In a rather unique twist, Darkwood is played from a top-down perspective, which is as terrifying as it is unusual for a survival horror game. During the day ,you’ll head out in the randomly generated and eerie woods, where you’ll scrounge for materials, build weaponry and uncover secrets. By the night time, you’ll have to find shelter, where you will barricade, hide and set up traps to defend yourself from the sinister entities that inhabit the dark.
It isn’t all as cut and dry as that, as you’ll work to gain skills and perks, which can be done by extracting a strange essence from mutated fauna and flora to inject into yourself. But beware, there may be dramatic consequences for doing so. You’ll also come across a number of dark characters, who will reveal their backgrounds, as you decide the fate of the enigmatic characters throughout the game.
Ultimately, Darkwood showcases the blurring lines between reality and nightmare in what offers up something different for the survival horror genre.
