Could Call Of Duty Black Ops 4 Get A Battle Royale Mode?
There’s an old adage in the video game industry, if something new comes around, and it works, and it’s successful…copy it. If you think about it, that happens a lot. Franchises that change the paradigm are copied and pasted and turned into something new. If there’s a new fad, people will copy it to try and capture its success. So, what’s the latest fad in gaming? Well, that would be the Battle Royale style games like Fortnite and PUBG, and it appears that Call of Duty Black Ops 4 might actually get a mode like that.
Now, this is by no means confirmed, however, Activision had a meeting with its investors, and one asked if their shooter games could get a Battle Royale style mode, if not a full-on game. To which, as noted by the Wall Street Journal, Activision noted:
“Management reminded investors that the company is a faster follower,”
Again, this is not a confirmation of anything. However, given that Black Ops 4 is slated to arrive this year, it could potentially be the first Call of Duty game to get a Battle Royale mode, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
What’s more, even if it doesn’t come via the main game itself, it could come via a DLC/update, which, if you recall, is exactly what Fortnite did. They launched their main game, then added the Battle Royale mode after.
Now, to be fair to Activision, they likely won’t full-on copy and paste the Battle Royale mode like Epic Games did when they basically copied PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. They, more than likely, will try and put their own stamp on things, make it unique to the Call of Duty universe and all that. Plus, they’ve had plenty of time to observe the two main Battle Royale games and see what works and what doesn’t.
We’ll find out soon when the community reveal comes in May.
