The Commissioner Of The Overwatch League Talks Season So Far
When Blizzard released Overwatch in 2016, it became one of the biggest hits in recent memory, and that honestly hasn’t stopped. It has over 35 million registered players (and likely a lot more), and still ranks very highly across the platforms it’s on. Then, Blizzard decided to up the ante by making a very special esports event for their title, the Overwatch League. A League where players would be in teams representing the world, where every match could be streamed on Twitch, and seasons would take place over the course of a few months.
The Overwatch League has wrapped up its first leg, with the second set to happen before the end of February, and early results proclaim it a hit. On Twitch, it’s gotten 10 million views in just its first week, and around 400,000 views average for each match. People are talking about it, there is merchandise being sold for it, there’s a lot to be happy about.
But, that’s just the “common man’s” perspective, how about what the man at the top thinks? Nate Nanzer is the commissioner of the Overwatch League, and in an interview with Gamespot he noted that the goal is to continue to make things better:
“There’s tons of things we want to continue to iterate on and improve, but right now we’re just really focused on figuring out how to continue to evolve and improve the show throughout the year, and have all of that culminate in the awesome finals event.”
Nanzer also notes that changing things is important to the growth of the league, and that changes have already been made, and will continue to be made:
“We’ve already changed the order of the maps and flow our games, and we’ve always been iterating things, but at some point when designing a league like this you have to put a flag in the ground and say ‘alright, this is what we’re doing’”.
We’ll have to see how things continue to grow and evolve as the Overwatch League powers on.
