Christopher Priest Didn’t Know He Was Reading God Of War Script At First
Voice acting hasn’t always gotten the praise it should. Even with cartoons, which have made numerous peoples’ careers, it hasn’t always been one to heap out praise. So when video games starting doing voice acting, and they tried to get big-name players to help lend to their titles, it often didn’t go too well. Or when they did get them, the results weren’t as desired. Now though, video games are praised and respected for their voice acting, and the latest game to receive praise for its voice acting is God Of War.
The hit game initially received criticism when Christopher Judge was brought in to voice Kratos, for he wasn’t the original voice actor. But, once people played the game, they realized that not only was he the perfect voice for this version of Kratos, but he added to the story in a great way.The ironic thing is, when Judge read the God of War script, he didn’t know it was for a video game.
“Reading the script for the first time, I thought it was for a big A-list film,” he explained to BBC. “I’m sure my agents purposefully didn’t tell me it was for a game because I’d been staunchly against doing them in the past. Now every actor I know is searching for a lead role in a game.”
Judge credits actors like Kevin Spacey (who headlined Call of Duty Advanced Warfare) for helping break the idea that A-list actors can’t do video games during their prime. And notes that now, games are just as much about stories as anything else:
“Games are not just about the gameplay anymore, but about the stories. There are wonderful tales to be told in this medium, and it truly is just another form to exercise your craft.”
Hopefully, with Judge’s excellent God of War performance, we’ll get even more top-tier actors doing video games.
