CD Projekt Red Discusses First-Person View In Cyberpunk 2077

At E3 2018, developer CD Projekt Red finally unveiled a full-on look at their next epic RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. This game sets you into a grim future in a rather dark city based on the trailer we got. You’ll be able to fully customize your character, and then allow them to make choices that will affect your entire world and the characters around you. Many considered the game the “Game of the Show”, but some are questioning one major aspect of the title, mainly, that it’s set in first-person view.

To be fair, there are plenty of RPGs out there who have or prefer players to use the first-person view when playing. The Elder Scrolls is the biggest example of this. But the catch is that unlike Elder Scrolls, Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have the option to switch to 3rd-person mode, so players will be rooted in first-person mode and that’s it, and many aren’t happy about that.

Now, there will be times when the camera goes to third-person mode, but they’ll be mainly for cutscenes and other rare gameplay situations when the camera needs to move. Why did CD Projekt Red decide to go this route? Especially since The Witcher series was all from the third-person view? Well, at E3 2018, they talked about their decision:

“First-person absolutely makes sense for us, because our company has always been about creating high quality role-playing games, and only by using first-person for this game, we’ve been truly able to achieve a very immersive experience,” said Kyle Rowley, associate design director on the game.

So it appears they’re going for a memorable experience above all else, that does feel like the developers M.O., and while it’s true that they didn’t do this like The Witcher series, that doesn’t mean that it won’t be good when the game comes out.
