Capcom’s Profits Soar Due To Monster Hunter World
Video games is a business, and the developers goals aren’t just to make great games, but to get a decent amount of profit from making those games. And while it’s true you can get good profit from decent games, many developers seek that knockout title to truly bring in the money. For Capcom, they’ve been having an uphill battle over the past few years, but this year, with the release of Monster Hunter World, their fortunes have been changing for the better.
Capcom announced today that because of the game, their profit year-on-year was boosted by over 45%, which is quite a jump because of a single game.
“In this business, the phenomenal success of Monster Hunter: World (for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) from the previous fiscal year continued, with the title gaining further popularity through the expansion of its user base. In scoring a worldwide smash hit, the series solidified its position as an international brand and strengthened our base of IP,” Capcom said.
Monster Hunter World has sold so far 8.5 million units roughly between both physical and digital versions on the Xbox One and the PS4. Which is an important distinction to make as the PC version just came out, and that will no doubt add to the sales number in numerous ways.
This game has been a labor of love and devotion for the dev team. They’ve been working on it for years, and aimed for this to be the Monster Hunter game that could finally be enjoyed by the whole world and not just the loyal fanbase in Japan, and it clearly worked. Plus, with their updates and DLC continuing to flow out, players are still getting to enjoy the title.
As for what’s next for Capcom, there are rumors of other big name franchises coming out this year, including Phoenix Wright on the Nintendo Switch, and Okami is coming to the Switch in August.
