Call of Duty WWII has managed to surpass over $500 million in sell-through in just the first three days of release, which has even managed to topple the box office openings of Thor: Ragnarok and Wonder Woman combined.
The latest entry in the FPS franchise managed to set a record on PS4, making it the best-selling digital full game by units sold on the first day of availability, whilst overall unit sales at launch tend to double year-over-year. This has been aided by the deeply personal and gripping narrative that the game possesses, as well as this release’s take on the traditional COD multiplayer and one of the main attractions, Nazi Zombies. This has seen the highest total of connected users on the current generations of consoles and PC in the franchise’s history.
Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, offered his thoughts on the release: “We challenged our players to get their squads back together and they answered the call with the highest number of players we’ve ever seen on current gen consoles and PC. Call of Duty: WWII returns the franchise to its roots and the results are incredible, selling twice as many units in its opening weekend as last year and setting the day one record for full-game downloads on PlayStation 4.”
He continued: “Our $500 million opening weekend was not only bigger than Thor: Ragnarok’s, it was bigger than the opening weekends of both Thor and Wonder Woman combined. And we’re committed to supporting the community with continuous improvements and new content.”
These stats include both retail and digital sales, with the latter being based on the sell-through of the first day of availability.
