Calin Mateias Faces $30, 000 Fee For DDoS Attacks Against Blizzard

Well kids, if there’s anything that you need to know about games today, is that you shouldn’t mess with video game developers. Calin Mateias, a World of Warcraft player, has been jailed because of DDoS attacks that he pulled in 2010 and he also had to pay an immense fee. Back in the day, you wouldn’t get these types of responses for something as a DDoS attack, but today game developers treat their property with utmost care, and so people that try to damage that property get dealt with swiftly and without mercy.

Blizzard

It seems like Blizzard isn’t having any of this nonsense, as this guy had to pay almost $30, 000 to them in restitution, which is a lot of money. So, why and who did he hit with these DDoS attacks? Well, this guy was obviously quite immature, as he directed his attacks at his own raid team so that he could take all the raid loot. On the BBC post it says:

Calin Mateias had been accused of flooding Blizzard Entertainment’s computer servers with traffic between February and September 2010. He was said to have carried out the distributed denial of service (DDoS) assault to prevent rivals logging in. Thousands of players were caught up in the resulting disruption. The Romanian citizen – who had been extradited to Los Angeles to face the charges – pleaded guilty in February to one count of causing damage to a protected computer.

It all sounds very technical, but at the end of the day, this all happened because Blizzard wants to make sure that everyone knows now to mess with their stuff. Also, being the video game giant that they are, they are making sure that the penalty for touching and “damaging” their property comes at a great price, which is £22,176 in the case of World of Warcraft player, Calin Mateias.
