Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey Getting More DLC?
The Nintendo Switch has brought a lot of “firsts” to Nintendo. It was the console where Nintendo truly embraced indie games, it was the console where they launched their first dedicated online service, and it was the first console to truly have DLC (outside of Smash Bros 4 on Wii U, but that was only for characters). They’ve had DLC for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors, and more. And according to the head of Nintendo, he wants more of that.
During the recent financial results meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described what he felt the Switch needed in order to keep going with the pace that it has.
“We need continuous growth. We must keep releasing new software. That includes DLCs and other contents for big titles that are already out.”
This is interesting for numerous reasons, the big one being that Breath of the Wild already had two DLC packs, and certain other titles haven’t had DLC at all.
Now granted, that doesn’t meant that there won’t be any DLC in the works right now, and Furukawa could just be expressive what is going to happen in the future, it’s just unclear at present.
For Breath of the Wild, it had a two-part DLC. The first part was the Master Trials challenge, along with costumes and other bonuses to the game. Then the second part was the story challenge called “The Champions Ballad”, where we got to learn a little more about the supporting cast of the game.
Super Mario Odyssey has had small additions, but nothing super major. So maybe that’s what Furukawa wants to change.
Either way, it’s admirable that he wants to extend the gameplay time of these titles, as that will help gamers during the “down periods” of the year when new games on the Switch aren’t out yet.
