Blizzard has been working hard for some time to crack down on the high levels of toxicity in Overwatch. An example of this activity recently took place in the Overwatch League, when a Dallas Fuel player known as Felix “xQc” Lengyel was suspender for making homophobic comments.
The Overwatch community is vast, and has seen players playing a key role in outing toxic behaviour. Now however, it would appear that Blizzard are taking control back, and will be taking a whole new approach to outlaw poor behaviour.
As stated in the following video by game director Jeff Kaplan, the team behind Overwatch are now looking to search through social media platforms to help discover toxic behaviour. To some, this may seem a bit over the top, but it might also work as an effective method of cutting down on the issue significantly, and will hopefully go towards bringing a much more positive experience to the popular shooter.
As far as their efforts have fared so far, there has been a 17% decrease in abuse in the in-game chat, though there has been an increase of 20% in how many players are reporting.
Overwatch is now available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
