For a couple months now, rumors have been swirling about what Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will have. But one of the most prevalent rumors was that the game wasn’t going to have a traditional singleplayer campaign. Well, the game has been unveiled, and many of the rumors were true, including the bit about singleplayer. Apparently, Treyarch made this game to be multiplayer focused at its core, and so even at the earliest stages of the game’s development, there was no singleplayer.
This was apparently their goal from the start:
“When we set out to make this game, we never started with the idea that we would make a traditional campaign,” said Treyarch. “That was just not part of our plan. We started from a place that we were gonna make a game that across the board can be playable with friends. That’s been our mission from day one.
All that being said though, the team is open to bringing a singleplayer campaign to Black Ops 4. The only catch is, they need to know that players want it.
“[The single player mode] is only missing at this moment in time,” they noted. “I really think with every game we make, we finish that title and then we ask ‘what is it fans are gonna love the most?’ If that’s another traditional campaign, then we’ll make another traditional campaign.”
So, while not confirming it, this seems to indicate that the game will get a singleplayer mode eventually. After all, many gamers like singleplayer campaigns, as they help break up the monotony of certain other modes in the game. And there are no doubt gamers who are disappointed that it won’t be at launch, so it’d be fair to expect it to come.
When exactly? Well, that depends on how quickly Treyarch can get it done.
