Bethesa Reveals When Starfield Was First Thought Of
Bethesda has made a name for themselves as one of the greatest video game developers on the planet right now. Between Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Prey, Doom, and a few others, they’ve been rocking games for over a decade. But, as many have noted, a lot of their franchises aren’t their own, but rather, they got the rights to them and made them their own. So, when E3 2018 came around and Starfield got announced, gamers were intrigued.
But, the question then emerged, when did they decide to make the game? It’s clear they’ve been making it for a while, but when did it all start? Well, Bethesda’s Todd Howard talked about this to VentureBeat, and gave a surprising answer to both development start, and its conception:
“After Fallout 4 ended,” Howard explained when it came to Starfield starting development. “End of 2015? But back when we — 2004, we had made a list of what we might want to do in the future. Epic science fiction game, that’s always been on my mind. Post-apocalyptic, Fallout, was our first choice. Sci-fi was our second at the time, when we got the Fallout license. We were going to do our own post-apocalyptic universe if we didn’t get Fallout.”
It almost makes you wonder what would’ve happened if they didn’t get Fallout 4, huh? But according to Howard, the desire to try and make Starfield real caught fire a few years back:
He continued, “We just talked about it, and then I guess it really picked up steam — we’re going to do this, register the trademark — about five years ago. Then we would talk about it from time to time during that period. What are we going to do? And we started work right after Fallout 4 was finished, November 2015.”
The game is still in heavy development, but it could arrive within the next year or so.
