Beat Saber and the studio that made the game, Beat Games, have been bought by Facebook because of their proven potential with VR technology.
Beat Saber and its success attracted a lot of attention
Beat Games are an indie studio that made the hit rhythm game, Beat Saber. You’re probably familiar with it. You get two sticks that are used to slice up the beat which comes in the form of cubes. Quite an exhilarating and fun little VR game that is loved by rhythm and VR fans alike. What made it so successful? Well, it combined the well-known formula of rhythm music games with virtual technology. It sounds simple, but rarely anyone manages to make these kinds of combinations fun and enjoyable in VR.
Facebook noticed the game’s success
Facebook obviously noticed how successful Beat Saber was. Then they decided to buy the game along with the studio that made it. Beat Games will join Facebook’s Oculus Studios as an independently operated studio in Prague. Facebook promises that the devs are going to continue to release content and updates for the game the same way they have been doing since the game launched.
If this is all true, I’m quite excited to see what the studio can do with the support they get from Facebook. But, Beat Saber being bought by Facebook might mean the end of custom tracks. And they are one of the most important parts of why Beat Saber always has content for players to enjoy. The question: “What does this mean for the modding community?” has been answered like this:
We understand and appreciate the value that modding brings to Beat Saber when done so legally and within our policies. We’re going to do our best to preserve the value that mods bring to the Beat Saber player base. As a reminder, our most recent policy updates give more clarity to how developer mode is intended to be used, such as helping developers build their apps or for enthusiasts to explore new concepts. It is not intended for engaging in piracy or illicit modding, including mods that infringe on third-party IP rights or contain malicious code.
Facebook is a company with a bad reputation
Facebook is a company that does not have a favorable reputation. I mean, they went to court because they were selling personal information of their users. Privacy breaching when you own one of the largest social platforms on the Earth is not something that goes well for you if you get caught. Naturally, people are already saying that Beat Saber and its studio are doomed.
