TellTale Games prides itself on its storytelling through its episodic titles. Always claiming that “your decisions will decide the path the story takes”. Usually, this comes down to key moment, key death, and of course, dialogue tree paths. However, for their Batman series, they’re doing something much more. For in the final episode of Batman: The Enemy Within, they’re creating their biggest branching story ever, one that focuses on what you made the Joker to be. Is he a villain? Or is he a vigilante?
To recap, ever since Season 01, the Joker has been on a path that led to this moment. It started with meeting Bruce Wayne, and then in Season 02, bringing him into The Pact. There, you slowly guided him down a path, whether you knew it or not. And now, depending on how things went in the last episode, things are about to explode in one of two ways.
In order to prove how different this story will be, two trailers were released today. One for the vigilante path, and one for the villain path.
As you can see, these trailers show vastly different content within the story. TellTale Games themselves admitted that these two very different storylines only share a small handful of similar scenes. Likely one at the beginning and certain dialogue scenes woven throughout. Everything else? Yeah, it’s very, very different, which makes it all the more appealing.
You have to wonder, if this goes over well with critics and gamers, will Telltale Games try and use this for future series like Walking Dead Season 04? A Wolf Among Us Season 02? Or maybe even Batman Season 03? It would be something cool if they did, and it would really help make every season a journey.
