Assassin’s Creed Won’t Be Returning To Annual Release Schedule
There was a time when the Assassin’s Creed franchise was one of the most popular gaming series around, and one of the reasons for that was because the games came out every year. However, while this was a strength at first, it soon became a curse, for certain titles didn’t live up to the standard that the previous titles did. Eventually, Ubisoft took a break, and worked hard to create Origins, which was a reset of sorts for the franchise. And now, a year later, we’re getting Odyssey.
This has left many wondering, is Assassin’s Creed going back to a full-on annual release schedule? Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had this to say on the matter when he talked with Geoff Keighley at E3 2018:
“The Assassin’s Creed brand is coming back this year because Ubisoft Quebec had been working on it for some time (three years), and they were ready to come, so they are coming,” said the CEO. “We are just now considering the brand. It’s a different approach than the one we had before, so you’ll see it some years but it will not be every year.”
This will likely be a relief to fans, as Origins was a good title in their eyes, and helped expand the franchise in meaningful ways. The last thing gamers want is another rushed title. And if Odyssey has been worked on for a couple years, that proves it’s not…potentially.
Still, it goes to wonder just when the next title will arrive once Odyssey is out. For if the Origins team started work once their game, and DLC, was done, then it might be about 2 years until we get the next main game. And, naturally, if Odyssey does well, or doesn’t, that’ll affect how soon the next game comes out too. Only time will tell.
