April NPD Numbers Put God Of War On Top
Every month, data is collected to reveal just how well certain games and systems did in the month itself. This past April had some big releases and debuts, and not all were what people were expecting. But when the dust settled, a returning video game character reigned supreme, as the rebooted God of War franchise took the top spot in April by a wide margin. And alongside that, the PS4 was the best-selling console in April. But there are a few twists in this tale though.
First up, here’s the breakdown of the top ten best-selling games in April:
- God of War 2018
- Far Cry 5
- MLB 18: The Show
- Labo Variety Kit
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
- Mario Kart 8
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Call of Duty: WWII
- Super Mario Odyssey
- NBA 2K18
Apparently, the new God of War title was the best dollar selling exclusive that Sony has ever had, and that’s not small feat. But, given the rave reviews the game got, and it already being considered a top contender for Game of the Year, it’s not surprising it sold very well.
The games good sales also seemed to propel the PS4 to new heights, as it set a record for sales in April, one that was previously held by the Nintendo Wii back in 2009. All around, it was a good month for Sony both in software sales and in hardware sales.
This perfectly leads into the next three games on the list. As Far Cry 5 and MLB The Show 18 arrived in late March, yet their sales continued throughout April, earning them the No.2 and No.3 spot respectively.
Then, there’s the Nintendo Labo, which has surprised many by having its Variety Pack land at No.4. It also should be noted that its solo Robot Pack ended up at No.21.
What was your biggest surprise on the list?
