Hollow Knight Has Sold 250,000 Units On Nintendo Switch So Far
An odd trends has occurred in regards to Nintendo and their latest console, the Switch. For while past consoles the Wii and Wii U have had indie games, the systems were not known for them. But with the Switch, not only is the system becoming a haven for indie titles, these indie titles often sell really well. Some even break expectations of the developers that put them on the system. You can imagine then how Hollow Knight developer Team Cherry felt when they got the jaw-dropping news about their game when it got its first sales numbers back.
To rewind a little, at E3 2018, during Nintendo’s digital press conference, Nintendo revealed that Hollow Knight was not only coming to the Switch, but it was available now. The game also got a spotlight feature on the Nintendo Treehouse segment. Fast forward two weeks, and Team Cherry and Nintendo revealed that the game had sold 250,000 units on the Switch during that time period.
To put this into context, Nintendo revealed a list of the top indie games sold on the Switch in its first year. If Hollow Knight had released just two weeks before that list was made? It would’ve been on it, with only two weeks of life! Imagine how much more it’s going to sell in the weeks to come?
The side-scrolling Metroidvania style game was released in February of 2017, which is another reason the game’s sales are so surprising. What was it that caused so many people to want to buy this game for the Switch? Don’t get us wrong, the game got a lot of praise when it arrived on Steam last year, and many consider it one of the best platforming titles of this generation, but still, that’s a lot of sales for an indie game for two weeks.
Who knows what indie game will have similar success on the Switch?
