PS4 Wins May NPD, Month Itself A Record-Setter
Every month is important to video game developers and publishers. For every month they fight to see who can get the most console sales, game sales, and more. So, when the NPD numbers arrive it helps shed some light on who’s doing well, and who needs to pick up the pace. May was an interesting month game wise. It had some big releases, and it was the month before E3, so that raises tension in some ways. In the end though, the PS4 came out on top.
According to the NPD numbers, while the PS4 was the best-selling hardware unit, the Switch was right behind it, with one of its versions being the best-selling SKU of the bunch. Furthermore, all the main systems actually did really well in May. With each of them hitting “all-time unit sales highs for a May month.” That’s very impressive. Even more impressive, this was the best-selling month of May, hardware wise, since 2011. So just imagine how many consoles were sold in the last month.
Now, moving onto software titles, the Xbox One/PC exclusive State of Decay 2 made its way to the top of the list, beating out some big contenders, including April’s top game God of War 4, which managed to drop down only one slot this month. Here’s the full top ten:
- State of Decay 2
- God of War 2018
- Detroit: Become Human
- Far Cry 5
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- NBA 2K18
As you can see, one of the big May releases, Detroit: Become Human, did rather well, as did Switch releases Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which is a Wii U port, as well as Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition, also a Wii U port.
And proving that good games don’t go out of style, both GTA V and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe found their way into the Top 10 as well.
