Overwatch League Gets New Controversy Via Teabagging Incident
The Overwatch League has been many things since its arrival last year. First off, it’s been a massive success, breaking records and proving that such a league can work in the world of esports and in gaming in general. Blizzard is already looking to expand the league for Season 02, which is a good sign for those who aren’t in it just yet. However, the league isn’t above controversy, and in fact, there have been numerous controversies in the league so far. And now, we can add one more to the list.
Last Saturday, a match was going on between Philadelphia Fusion and the Shanghai Dragons. During one particularly intense duel, Fusion player Jae-hyeok “Carpe” Lee decided to “celebrate” a victory over player Gi-hyeon “Ado” Chon by teabagging them in game after killing their character.
For those who don’t know, “teabagging” is an act of crouching down over a dead player to show that they owned them. It’s honestly a bit more vulgar than that, but I don’t want to go into it.
Upon seeing this happen live, the people who were in the building started booing Carpe, and both Twitter and Twitch exploded with posts about what should be done about him.
Not so ironically, there is a bit of a divide here. One-half of the people want him punished for the gesture, which many considered offensive. While the other half feel it isn’t worth a punishment. Some people even upped the joke by making a movie trailer about the incident.
At present, the Overwatch League hasn’t punished Carpe. And since they are known for giving out punishments for those players who violate their rules, that might indicate they don’t feel he violated their “Code of Conduct”. Of course, this could all change, it just depends. To be fair, this isn’t even close to some of the other violators who threw out racial slurs or directly broke the league’s rules.
