Insomniac Games has arguably one of the biggest gaming titles coming out this year in Spider-Man. This take on the fan-favorite superhero is highly-anticipated by man, and for good reason. The game was revealed two years back, and we’ve slowly been getting information about it ever since. Yet, one question has remained on the minds of everyone since its reveal: How did Insomniac get the rights to do the game? Well, we now have an answer, and it honestly ties back to the history of Insomniac itself.
The CEO of the studio, Ted Price, did an interview with GameInformer and revealed that much of what Insomniac did in the past led to them getting Spider-Man. First, it started with their legendary Spyro series, which helped get them started in the platfroming genre. Then, they started killing it on the Rachet & Clank saga. Then they did Fuse and Sunset Overdrive, which allowed them to do even bigger worlds and settings. After all of this, Sony came by and gave them an offer.
They asked if they would be up for working with Marvel on a title for one of their characters. Ironically, it was Insomniac who chose to do Spider-Man, not Marvel.
Some of the challenges the team faced was making an accurate version of New York, where Peter Parker lives in the comics. It was also important for them to balance the personalities of Peter Parker and Spider-Man while also having the humor that the characters are known for.
As it stands, the game is going to be the biggest game Insomniac has ever done. Yet, Price notes they’re sticking to what they know in some aspects, so if you liked previous Insomniac games, you should like this one too.
We’ll just have to see how it all goes when Spider-Man releases on September 7th.
