There are many things that can trigger a gamer. But few can trigger them as much as a bad port. Why? Well, because if it’s a bad port, that means that the game itself is good, just not on the system it was brought to, which means the developer was lazy and didn’t do the work to ensure that the game worked well on the new system. Square Enix, for all their great games, has a mixed history when it comes to ports. Which was proven recently with Chrono Trigger.
Chrono Trigger is by and large one of the most beloved video games of all time. Not to mention one of the greatest RPGs of all time. To that end, it’s been ported multiple times since its arrival on the SNES. Those ports were good too, and even enhanced the game most of the time. But, when it was brought to Steam, they didn’t do it right.
How? Well, the only “bad” port of the game (as acknowledged by all who played it) was the version that was on iOS. To that end, the iOS version was the one brought to Steam, and gamers weren’t happy. And why should they be? There were text issues, graphics issues, and much more. Gamers called out Square Enix for what they did, and today, they officially responded and noted that things will change.
A series of patches will be coming, and one of them will feature a graphics swap:
“We’re aiming to release the first of these patches in the first half of April, and the biggest change is that it will include an option to switch between the current high-resolution graphics, and the original graphical style of Chrono Trigger.”
It’s ironic that they called the current graphics set “high-resolution”, because players would say anything but. But hey, it’s a start, and hopefully, a lesson learned. If you’ve got a great game, don’t go lazy on the port.
