Is There A New Donkey Kong Game On The Horizon?
Nintendo is a publisher that has the honor of having many different franchises to choose from when thinking about new games. However, some of these titles have gone dormant, and others haven’t gotten word of a new game for a long time. One such franchise is Donkey Kong. For while a port of the Wii U game Tropical Freeze is coming in May to the Nintendo Switch, there has no word about a new title coming to the Switch…or has there?
For Gamingbolt has made note that an Instagram post from Nintendo Italy (which sadly has been deleted) may be teasing otherwise. The post had a simple picture of Donkey Kong, but its caption read “There is no two without three.” The revitalized franchise began on the Wii with DKC Returns, then went to the Wii U with Tropical Freeze. That’s two. So if this is to be believed, the “three” could be another game in the works right now.
Not only is this possible, it’s very believable. Both DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze were both very well received, and sold rather well. So for Nintendo to not be doing a true third title would be odd. What’s more, many suspect that bringing Tropical Freeze to the Switch (with some small upgrades) is meant to help build up hype for the reveal of the next Donkey Kong game.
The question is, who would be making it? The first two were made by Retro Studios. They’ve been “in hiding” working on their title every since Tropical Freeze released. Some think they are making the next one, while others think they’re working on something entirely different, no one really knows.
There’s hope though in the form of E3 2018. Nintendo has kept things rather light in regards to their big game reveals for this year so far. So if there is going to be an announcement, it’s likely going to be there.
