Fighting games are known for their intense battle systems and the ability to bring people together to beat the crap out of each other. But also, they’re known for their rosters. Everyone has a favorite character, least favorite, etc. And the developers like to change things up with special characters, and sometimes, crossover characters. For proof of this, look at Soul Calibur VI, who just revealed The Witcher’s Geralt would be in the game. For BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle though, they’re going the extra mile in regards to the team known as RWBY.
RWBY is an American anime (yes, that’s a thing) developed by a team called Rooster Teeth. They’re a company that specializes in internet shows. RWBY is by far one of their most popular properties, but, they’ve never been in a “true” video game before (there was a fan-made title that got Rooster Teeth’s support, but that doesn’t really count). So, how did this anime series get converted into fighting game characters?
Well, it all has to do with the series creator, Monty Oum, who inspired a lot of people. Including, apparently, some people at Arc Systems, the team behind Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle. Producer Toshimichi Mori talked about this to GamerHubTV:
“There was an interview with Forbes where the question is, “Is there any specific character or IP that you really like or you are a fan of?’ And Mori-san answered, ‘RWBY’. And that kind of started this whole discussion. And after meeting, Mori-san was really confident that he could have a really good partnership. They made a trip to Texas – Mori-san and the president – and they made a presentation about BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and asking, ‘Could we have RWBY?’ And the answer was, ‘Of course.’ So that’s how this happened.”
Currently, Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long from RWBY (get it?) are all going to be in the game. But, there’s a chance that some other characters could enter the mix as well. Either way, it’s a welcome sight to see them in the game.
