Kingdom Come: Deliverance Dev Talks About Comparisons To Other Titles
When a video game gets made, it’s almost instantly compared to other titles in the world of gaming. In fact, for a game not to be compared to another title is very rare. Now, that doesn’t mean that said title is completely like other titles, it just means it reminds gamers of them. This can be both a benefit and a hindrance depending on the title. Take, for example, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, a brutal medieval game that has had many people reminded of Assassin’s Creed or Shadow of War. But in the minds of the developer, that’s not what it is.
Warhorse Studios Executive Producer Martin Kilma talked in a weekly update about what he thinks about these comparisons:
“I don’t see KCD as competing with the likes of Assassin’s Creed or Shadow of War,” he said. “We simply don’t have resources to create a game like that. I don’t view us as an indie game either, though. The trend I see in ‘real’ AAA games, like the ones I mentioned above, is toward making games more and more forgiving, better suited to the most casual and absent-minded players; they are games that in effect are ‘playing themselves’. So, you have all those different markers, prompts and handy hints that you never have to think about what to do next.”
Another thing that separates Kingdom Come: Deliverance from other games in the mind of its developer is its protagonist, Henry. For unlike many battle or RPG titles, this time, your protagonist is a true “everyman”. And because of that, he almost dies several times in the story, whereas a “chosen one” would’ve risen above every challenge put in front of them.
The game is also quite unforgiving in terms of difficulty, if you don’t take the time to learn the game’s systems, you will fall.
