Is Ubisoft Not Planning A Sequel For Rainbow Six Siege?
For video game developers, there are a lot of questions that have to be asked about a title after launch. In the modern age of gaming, one of the most important ones is, “How long do we support the title?” After that’s answered, the other burning question is, “Do we make a sequel?” For Ubisoft, they’ve never been shy about making sequels or continuations of their titles, but with Rainbow Six Siege, they may be taking a different path. One that focuses on continued content rather than full-on sequel.
At the 2018 Invitational Finals for Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft held a panel to talk about the game, and Reddit broke down what was talked about there. One of the most intriguing things was that Ubisoft said there are no plans for a sequel to Siege, and that they “were there to stay for 10 years”. That’s a long time for any video game, let alone a shooter.
So, why are they going this path? Well, Ubisoft noted at the panel that the games player base is now at 27 million total, and it’s been growing steadily since its launch in 2015. With so many players participating, it makes sense that Ubisoft would want them continuing to play a game that it’s clear they love rather than try to match what the game does via a sequel.
What’s more, the “Year 3” content is set to arrive soon, and that will likely bring more players to the fold while engaging those that are already here. There will be 8 new Operators to play as in year 3, and Ubisoft apparently has a goal of 100 Operators they want to make.
So, can Rainbow Six Siege survive without a sequel? Yes. In fact, another popular developer has said that they would rather continue with content rather than make a sequel. That was Psyonix, and their game Rocket League, and that title is doing just fine as well.
