Seems like Ubisoft got insanely impressed by games like Fortnite and GTA V so they’re making Assassin’s Creed Infinity a live-service title.
Fortnite and GTA Online are money-making monsters. Some may find that strange considering Fortnite is a free2play game and GTA V can be picked up for insanely low prices considering the game’s almost 10 years old now. Yet they’re the most profitable pieces of gaming property in the industry.
Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec won’t pass turns developing Assassin’s Creed games anymore. From now on these two will work together. Assassin’s Creed Infinity is the name of the newest AC project and it’s a live-service title with multiple settings which will expand over time.
How will these studios work together, depends on the leadership. There’s some bitter rivalry between them according to the Bloomberg report. However, a lot of big names from Ubisoft are participating in the creation of Infinity:
- Marc-Alexis Côté, Executive Producer of the Assassin’s Creed franchise
- Julien Laferrière, Senior Producer
- Jonathan Dumont and Clint Hocking, Creative Directors of Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Montreal
On one hand, Ubisoft is bringing their big guns, and considering what they’re doing with their new ARPG spin on the franchise, this might be a good thing. On the other hand, live-service games have their own share of problems. The question is, can Ubisoft avoid those bumps and deliver a game that can last and provide quality entertainment?
