Ninja Theory surprised everyone when they released Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. It was a game that portrayed mental health issues in a grim and eerie world with a strong and competent female lead. It didn’t dig deep into the whole mental health issue as it could have, but it was still a moving and extremely memorable experience. Now it seems like we’re going to visit another terrifying world in Hellblade 2, the first Xbox Series X title. Severed limbs, giants, spine-chilling chanting, someone being burned alive. Yes, this is how you do an announcement trailer. It’s creepy, it’s powerful, and even though it doesn’t tell you much it still captivates you with its raw imagery and absolutely brutal sound design mixed with some primal chanting.
Ninja Theory obviously knows what they’re doing. And since Hellblade 2 is the first game for Xbox Series X, Microsoft also believes in their skills. To be perfectly honest, I never expected to see a sequel to Senua’s Sacrifice. Admittedly, it was a weird game that got a lot of positive feedback. But it never gave the impression that the world or the character needed a continuation. Well, a sequel is coming. And it looks pretty badass. I’m very ecstatic to see where they’re going with it.
