Worlds Adrift Is Shutting Down
Seems like Worlds Adrift, an open world sandbox MMO about flying ships is going to shut down in the near future.
Worlds Adrift never really managed to nail its premise as much as it needed to. That’s why it never actually got the recognition it required to stay alive. It spent quite some time in Early Access trying to become playable without bugs and issues instead of trying to be the sandbox set in the skies where you could use grappling hooks and flying ships.
Even though it has a lot of issues, a lot of players are asking for the devs to either let them host private servers or release an offline version. That’s because Worlds Adrift had potential. Potential to be an amazing game, if only it got a few more years to reach that potential. A community-crafted MMO that focused on player freedom and multiplayer physics.
Their official statement goes more in-depth as to why they decided to close the game’s servers down:
We are immensely grateful for every Traveller that’s come to experience this community crafted world. However, Worlds Adrift just hasn’t reached the level of popularity it needs to continue. The challenges that came with our ambitious project meant that all our work went into making the game work rather than making it the experience we wanted it to be. As a result we failed at making a game that could capture the imaginations of millions.
We’ve written posts about this game several times in the past, and it makes us sad to see it go. Even though it was plagued by many issues, a lot of loyal backers kept on supporting it through its development. This news is going to affect them the most. Hopefully, the devs decided to at least let the players host their own private servers.
Cosmetic items are now free for everyone, and Worlds Adrift Founder Captains will receive Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread for their support.
