Mortal Kombat 11 Emphasizes Evolution Of Series Story
When you think about fighting games, rarely do you ever think about the story aspect of the titles. Many fighting game series do have story modes, don’t get me wrong. But for the longest time, they were very superficial. Or in the case of something like BlazBlue, incoherent. Then, it started to change and get a lot better. More detailed, more evolved. And NetherRealm Studios has been a big focus of that new type of fighting game stories. Especially when it comes to Mortal Kombat 11.
Mortal Kombat 11 will again embrace time travel, but this time it’s the past coming to the present to save the future. And for the story director of the game, Dominic Cianciolo, the story shows of the evolution that the games have gone through recently.
“The biggest thing in terms of the evolution is the presentation of it,” he said. “Over the past few games that our studio has released, the characters look better than ever, the environments look better than ever and certainly from a performance standpoint, the work our character team has done to improve the expressiveness of the characters and what they can do has just made it that much easier for our fans to get in and emotionally relate to characters in the story.
He went on:
“That also allowed us to write things into the story in terms of performance that perhaps we would have passed on before because the characters simply weren’t able to do it. But now that we’ve gone so advanced with this technology, they (the characters) are almost more human than human and we can really do some interesting things with it.”
The other big driving factor in the storyline is the fans, who the director notes is a group they’re always trying to impress and keep things fresh for.
The game arrives on consoles and PC on April 23rd.
