Sakurai Talks Persona 5 In Smash Bros
The arrival of Super Smash Bros Ultimate has brought a lot of fun to gamers all over the world, and to that end, they’re looking forward to the arrival of the DLC characters. First will come Piranha Plant (given to those who get the game and register it with their MyNintendo account before January 31st), and then will come five very special DLC characters that few will likely see coming. This was proven at The Game Awards a few weeks back when Joker from Persona 5 was revealed to be coming to the game.
Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, has another upcoming column with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, and in excerpts released for it, he talked about what it was like bringing in Joker to the game:
Joker isn’t currently in a playable state but we’re steadily producing him. Personally I have high respects for P5 so I really think working on him is a job that gives me inexhaustible stimulus.
Given that Smash Bros as a whole has brought in many 3rd party characters in the past, and will continue to do so with Ultimate, it’s fascinating that it was Persona 5 that gave Sakurai new energy. But, the series is popular in Japan, where Sakurai is from, so why not?
Now, the reveal itself came from a very special trailer at The Game Awards, but Sakurai noted that this wasn’t an easy thing to pull off:
At first I got contacted by Nintendo that they want to reveal [P5 Joker in Smash] at TGA. He hadn’t been produced at that time so we used anime as presentation. We had some hardships on scheduling with the voice actors.
Regardless of hardships, the trailer was magnificent, and fans are very excited for the crossover. No release window yet for when Joker arrives.
