Nintendo Not Planning N64 Classic

Nintendo made a very bold move in the last few years before the launch of the Switch. With the Wii U dying and bleeding out money and sales, the Big N decided to make a retro console that would play up the nostalgia factor and get people interested in playing a ton of older games on a single system. This was the NES Classic, and it sold so well, that even Nintendo was stupified on how get it went. Then, they released the SNES Classic, and it too had tremendous sales. So, was the N64 Classic next in line?

While all signs seemed to point to that, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime is saying otherwise. In an interview with Kotaku, he revealed that the birth of the first two Classics were a desperate need based on what was going on with the Wii U:

“We were clear when we did the first two Classic series that, for us, these were limited time opportunities that were a way for us as a business to bridge from the conclusion of Wii U as a hardware system to the launch of NintendoSwitch,” he told the site. “That was the very strategic reason we launched the NES Classic system.”

He went on to say:

“So while consumers may have been anticipating something, we view these as limited time opportunities. We’ve also now been very clear that as the consumer looks forward to engaging with our classic content that is going to happen more and more with the subscription service. I would not ever rule something out, but what I can tell you is certainly that’s not in our planning horizon.”

Sorry Nintendo fans, it looks like an N64 Classic isn’t in the cards. But, if the Nintendo Switch Online service brings in N64 games, that might be the better option.

Lets be blunt, they will do it but just not for the holiday season at this time…unless they just surprise it as a last minute-like thing.

However, they would just sell a few units for a long time and then it will become ‘huge’ after they have scalped a bunch of money like last time. So basically, if they turned out and started selling it in what they would say ‘bulk’, you still wouldn’t see one reasonably until summer vacation anyways.
