Blizzard “Open-Minded” To Bringing Overwatch To The Switch
The Nintendo Switch has been a big hit for many, and not just gamers, but for those making video games as well. It’s already become the place to put indie games, and 3rd party developers who normally don’t support Nintendo have pledged games to it. This includes Blizzard, who hasn’t supported Nintendo since the N64 days with StarCraft. They recently released Diablo III – The Eternal Collection, and many are hoping that Overwatch would be the next game to come to the portable console.
But the question is…will it? That’s the rub, isn’t it? Because since the launch of the Nintendo Switch last year, Blizzard has had numerous conversations with many publications about the game coming to Switch, and they don’t exactly refuse the possibility, but they never truly confirm it either. Creative Director Jeff Kaplan talked with Eurogamer at BlizzCon 2018 and noted this:
Our philosophy has always been we want as many players playing Overwatch as possible, and we want to reach as many possible Overwatch players as are out there. We will always explore a platform if we think we could make it viable – both the technology and the business relationship. We would love to do it.
That’s hardly a confirmation, and it’s basically what they’ve said in the past. So, Eurogamer pushed harder, all but demanding to know if it’s a possibility that the game will come to Switch, which Kaplan replied…
It’s something we’re very open-minded about.
Again, not a definite confirmation, but something to hold to hope for. Now, in the past, Kaplan noted that the biggest detriment to Overwatch being on Switch wasn’t the graphics, or even the online component, but rather, that the team would have to work on ANOTHER version of the game. Which would bring the “separate versions” to 4, and he felt that was too much for the team to balance. We’ll just have to see how it goes.
