Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales now has a 37-minute gameplay walkthrough that reassures us that this is a promising spin-off.
A combination of a card game, RPG, and narratively driven gameplay is what Thronebreaker is all about. It is charming, yet quite brutal and true to the Witcher world that we are familiar with. Is this the spin-off that everyone was waiting for? Well, both yes and no.
The whole game feels like a Gwent single-player campaign. That’s what this was meant to be in the beginning. But, that isn’t a bad thing, and from what we’ve seen in the walkthrough, this is an experience that you don’t want to miss. The combat looks like Gwent, but the world and the cutscenes and the interactions feel like The Witcher 3. The writing and the dialogue are top notch, as one would expect from CD Projekt Red.
The walkthrough shows us how the world works in this title. There are still monsters everywhere, and we even get to see a fight with a manticore. But, humans are also a great threat, and there is a war going on. Players that control the Queen need to make difficult choices which will have consequences somewhere along the way. There’s surprisingly a lot to do in a game like this. You will meet new characters, find many side quests, and engage in all kinds of interesting conversations.
Players can upgrade buildings, talk to their companions, and unlock all kinds of new options for your troops. This feels like a title that slowly swallows up all of your free time until you beat it. This is a good thing, as more of anything related to the Witcher series is always welcome.
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is coming on October 23rd. We don’t know for much it will keep us occupied, but this is a game we can’t wait to play as soon as it comes out.
