Anthem Creative Director Talks Gameplay Focus
The team at Bioware have decades worth of history making RPGs. But more than that, they have a history of putting deep intrinsic stories into their titles, and ever since Knights of the Old Republic, they like to let people guide conversations so that they can go down their own path. This was personified in their Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles. But now, with Anthem, they’re still going to have a deep story, but they’re also going to have much deeper gameplay.
Apparently, though, the Bioware team is very happy to be taking this path with Anthem. As since this is a new IP, the pressure of maintaining the story or style of past IP isn’t on them.
“It’s very refreshing, it’s invigorating,” said Creative Director Johnathan Warner when he sat down with GamesTM. “And usually, when you talk about a Mass Effect or a Dragon Age, people invariably end up talking about the plots or the points, and it’s very refreshing, when people talk about Anthem, they talk about flying or fighting monsters, or the gear, the Javelins, and it’s been a great opportunity for us to put gameplay first.”
To reiterate though, the Bioware tame are making a world full of story, in fact, just because they’re working a lot on gameplay doesn’t mean that they won’t be doing just as much work on making the world full of interesting things story wise:
“It’s very important to us that we create immersive worlds, where you can have companionship, and where you get to be the hero of your own story,” Warner added. “I think those elements are very much intact with Anthem. We’re adding things to it, we’re adding these interesting social storytelling elements to it. But, those moments, that companionship and strong characters, those are very much there.”
Anthem is set to come out in 2019.
