Is Boundless Going To Be Ruined By Microtransactions?
It’s never a good idea to have microtransactions in a game that you have to pay for. Boundless is one of the latest MMOs that came into the market, with some questionable payment models.
Boundless is a voxel-based MMO, and it looks a lot like Minecraft to most of us. Now, the game was also called Oort Online, and it spent four years in Early Access. Now the game officially released a couple of days ago, and it got quite a lot of positive reviews.
But, all of a sudden, negative reviews for the game started appearing. It seems that the players aren’t too happy with the in-game microtransactions.
People aren’ usually upset with microtransaction, but if they are in a free2play game. Notice how we didn’t specify that Boundless is a free2play title? The game costs $39.99, so it isn’t even a cheap game by any means. You can now understand why some players were bothered by certain in-game purchases that help you advance faster than other players.
What exactly is the problem with these microtransactions? Well, loads of stuff that you should be able to earn in-game is bought with these Cubits, which are a premium currency. If you want to build stuff, you need to buy a Plot, which is basically a piece of land. You get one Plot for free after the tutorial, later on, you need to buy them with Cubits.
Do you want another character slot? That’s 600 Cubits, and so on. This is something that you would see in a free2play game, not one you just bought for $40.
The players are obviously angry with these microtransactions, as they really shouldn’t be in this game at all, at least not in this way. If the developers don’t do something about them, this pretty interesting MMO is going to run into a lot of issues very quickly.
