Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Recruitment Mechanic Detailed

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has a lot of pressure on it, for it’s coming about a year after the mega-hit for the franchise that was Assassin’s Creed Origins. Origins set the series back on track after a slew of mediocre titles with questionable stories and upgrades. But Origins took things back to its roots in the best way possible, and gamers responded, and now, it’s up to Odyssey to continue that path of momentum. And the team at Ubisoft are making sure everything is explained and understood before the game’s launch.

An interview with Game Informer had Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Dumont talk about the game and its mechanics, including being able to recruit people to your cause. In comparison, it’s kind of like what Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War did with the Nemesis system but here, you’re recruiting people of Greece to help fight against the Templar threat.

“The recruitment system gives a lot more depth to the game and the world that you’re adventuring in,” Dumont told Game Informer. “What happens when you recruit them is they are bonuses for your ship. Almost everybody in the world can be recruited for your ship.”

That being said, there are those in Odyssey that can’t be recruited, and you’ll need to be careful how you use them. Unlike the Nemesis system, this isn’t about combat, it’s about using your team to your advantage to get what you need done and then leave:

“You’re also able to call them as a distracting mob when you’re trying to stealth around,” he continued. “You can point to a certain character and say ‘alright, go distract him,’ and then one of your guys is going to come in and beat him up.”

How you use the system will be up to you when Assassin’s Creed Odyssey arrives on October 5th.
