2018 SXSW Gaming Awards Results
Is it ever too early or too late for a video game awards show? Well, no. Which was proven last night as the 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards took place. This is the fifth year that the event was held, and it was quite a show. But you could argue that this show was one of the most important video game awards shows because it was the gamers who got to vote for the winners in all categories. Over 500,000 gamers from all over voted, and got the results right here.
First off, the big winners of the night were The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Each title took home three awards, and in categories that fit their place in last year’s history. Zelda took home “Excellence In Gameplay”, “Excellence In Design” and “Video Game of the Year.” Meanwhile, PUBG took home “Trending Game of the Year”, “Esports Game Of the Year”, and “Excellence In Multiplayer”.
Other big winners included Nier: Automata, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Cuphead, who took home two awards a piece. Not surprisingly, Cuphead took home the awards for best art and animation. Hard to argue with that given the style and crispness of the game.
There were a few surprises among the mix as well at the SXSW Gaming Awards. For example, “Best Narrative” went to What Remains Of Edith Finch. Star Wars Battlefront II won the award for “Excellence In Convergence”, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard won the award for “Best VR Game”.
Oh, and for all you Doki Doki Literature Club! fans, the game won the “Cultural Innovation Award”. If you’ve played the game, you’ll know that’s ironic.
Oh, and if you’re wondering how the mobile games did, Fire Emblem Heroes won “Mobile Game Of The Year.”
